NPCIL and AREVA sign MOU to set up Nuclear Power Plants

DELHI, February 4, 2009 – Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and AREVA, France signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today in New Delhi to set up Nuclear Power Reactors at Jaitapur in Maharashtra State in India.

The agreement was signed by Dr. S.K. Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of NPCIL, and Ms. Anne Lauvergeon, Chairman and CEO of AREVA in the presence of Shri Prithviraj Chavan, Hon’ble Union Minister of State (Prime Minister’s Office) India and Mrs. Anne-Marie Idrac, Hon’ble Minister of Commerce, France. Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary to Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India was also present during the signing of MoU.

This MoU provides for engagement of NPCIL and AVERA into the discussion for preparing the contract and related detail of setting up of two to six 1650 MWe EPRTM reactor units including life time fuel supply for these reactors. This MoU comes in wake of the bilateral agreement signed between India and France on 30th September, 2008, wherein two countries agreed to work together for the development of peaceful use of Nuclear Energy.

NPCIL is unique in having built, under one roof, comprehensive capability in all facets of nuclear technology namely – site selection, design, construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance and life extension of Nuclear Power Plants.

NPCIL have at present 17 Nuclear Power Reactors of 4120 MWe in operation and 5 Nuclear Power Reactors of 2660 MWe under construction. NPCIL have plans for significant capacity addition. Government of India have contemplated plans to build series of reactors based on technical co-operation with France, Russian Federation and USA at coastal locations in the country. Four such locations are currently under consideration of the Government of India.

AREVA is amongst global leaders in nuclear power front end and back end activities and manufacturing of heavy components. AREVA offers reliable technological solution for CO2 free power generation. AREVA already have presence in India in power transmission and distribution segment through AREVA, T&D employing 4200 persons at eight industrial sites.
